Salut,

Doua anunturi cu burse de doctorat in Anglia, pe Data Intensive Science si Astrofizica. Ii incurajez pe absolventii IT, informatica sau matematica, in special pe astronomii amatori, sa le luati in calcul.

Subject: PhD opportunities at the ICC
Date: Mon, 24 Apr 2017 19:19:21 +0100 (BST)
From: Carlos Frenk <c>

Durham University has just been awarded 11 PhD studentships to set up a
new Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Data Intensive Science. These
4-year studentships are funded by STFC, the UK's research council for
Astronomy and Particle Physics. Up to half of these studentships are
available for non-UK candidates from the EU.

The studentships will fully fund the PhD, providing a stipend for living
expenses (£14553 for 2017/18, with no tax deductions to pay) and
covering fees. The CDT comprises the Institute for Computational
Cosmology, the Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology, Centre for
Extragalactic Astronomy and the Centre for Advanced Instrumentation and
will be supported by 6 industrial partners (including IBM and other
large firms). The studentships are for four years and include a six
month secondment at one of the industrial partners.

Over the first six months of the course, the CDT students will follow a
combination of subject specific training and advanced training in
computational methods, along with training in complementary skills. The
research projects for CDT students recruited to the ICC will be drawn
from our research programme which spans the running and analysis of
large supercompute simulations of the formation of cosmic structures and
the preparation for and analysis of large galaxy surveys, such as DESI
and Euclid.

After successful completion of the PhD programme, students will be
equally well qualified to pursue a scientific career in academia or in
industry.

The studentships will start in October 2017. Applications are invited
following the instructions on:
https://www.dur.ac.uk/physic/postgraduate/...owtoapply/

There is no deadline, but candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as
possible. Further information be obtained from Carlton Baugh
(c.m.baugh@durham.ac.uk) or Peder Norberg (peder.norberg@durham.ac.uk).

Subject: Re: PhD places in Data Intensive Science.

From: Peter Thomas <p>

Please excuse this mass mailing. If you know of any
computationally-minded students who have not yet got a PhD place for
next year, then we are recruiting to a new initiative in Data Intensive
Science. Please pass on this message.

The Sussex Astronomy Centre is delighted to announce the availability of
two new PhD studentships in the area of data-intensive science. These
are to begin in September 2017 and are fully funded for 4 years. One of
the studentships is open to students of any nationality, the other is
reserved for UK applicants.

This programme offers a unique opportunity to develop advanced knowledge
of data-intensive methods in astronomy as well as industrial
applications. The programme combines specialist training in
data-intensive science, transferable skills development and a 6-month
industrial placement. For a list of possible projects, and for
instructions on how to apply, please see our studentships web page
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/astronomy/vacancies/studentships

The closing date for applications is 31 May 2017, but applications will
be considered as they are received, so you are encouraged to apply as
soon as possible.

Si alte pozitii de doctorat similare in Anglia...

----

Buenas tardes,

There are a number of universities in the UK advertising multiple PhD positions in astronomy funded under a research council (STFC) initiative to stimulate data-intensive science. Below is the ad from Liverpool John Moores University, which just appeared in the AAS Job Register (https://jobregister.aas.org/job_view?JobID=60196) but I think also Cardiff, Sussex, Durham, Edinburgh, UCL, etc. have places on offer, with full scholarship funding also for non-UK residents/nationals.

Best regards

Johan

Job Announcement Text:

The Astrophysics Research Institute (ARI) of Liverpool John Moores University is offering up to 6 fully funded four-year PhD scholarships in Data Intensive Science. This is part of a new initiative to establish a Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), hosted jointly by the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University. Students will be based within the ARI and will work on astrophysics projects related to the analysis and manipulation of Big Data. Examples of projects include, but are not restricted to: simulations of low surface brightness galaxy emission recovery from LSST; transient classification in the LSST data deluge; self consistent annihilation simulations of dark matter; using cosmological simulations to develop large-scale structure emulators to constrain dark sector physics; viewing cosmological simulations with virtual telescopes; observable properties of core-collapse supernovae.

In addition to training in skills and knowledge relevant to their project and general astrophysics, CDT students will benefit from bespoke training in various aspects of data intensive science in their first year, attending postgraduate lectures at both universities. Each student will also spend at least six months outside the centre in a placement with one or more partners from industry or research organisations (excluding universities) engaged in the development and use of data intensive science techniques in a different area to their research project.

CDT students will join our current cohort of 32 PhD students at the ARI. These are engaged in fundamental astrophysics research over our full scientifc areas of interest: galaxy formation and evolution; star formation and stellar evolution; time-domain astrophysics; and astronomical instrumentation. The Institute consists of 22 full time academics plus research fellows, PDRAs, technical and admin staff. The ARI owns and operates the robotic 2m Liverpool Telescope as a national facility and is developing a 4m robotic telescope with first light planned for 2022. ARI also hosts the EAGLE and BAHAMAS cosmological simulations.

Liverpool is located in the north west of England and is a city with a rich sense of culture based on its maritime history. It has a thriving music and arts scene and a sharp sense of humour, making it excellent for student living. Liverpool boasts more museums, theatres and art galleries than any other city in the UK outside London. In 2018 Liverpool will be hosting the European Week of Astronomy and Space Science on the Liverpool Waterfront, an iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site on the river Mersey. The ARI and University of Liverpool are located in the knowledge quarter of the city within easy walking distance of each other.

Requirements: the applicants need to have gained a first class or upper second honours degree (or equivalent) or a master's degree in an appropriate subject e.g. astronomy, physics or mathematics. A good command of English to at least IELTS level 6.5 is also required for international applicants. Students will be expected to start on 1st October 2017.

For enquires please contact either Professor Chris Collins c.a.collins@ljmu.ac.uk or Professor Shiho Kobayashi s.kobayashi@ljmu.ac.uk
